Midcentury Modern- everyone knows the name but only the interior decor savvy know the style. What is Midcentury Modern? Why did it become so popular back in the 1930s? And how has it remained a top trend from the early 2000s to now? Curbed.com wrote a great piece on the topic and defined this iconic style as the architecture, furniture, and graphic design from the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965, though some would argue the period is specifically limited to 1947 to 1957). The style became popular in the 30s because of designers desire to break away from traditional aesthetic. It has remained a staple in A quick Google search for Midcentury Modern furniture will show you thousands and thousands of furniture and decor manufactured to mimic the unique and modernist style. Pieces featuring sleek, straight lines and less ornate detail focusing on more geometric and fluid shapes are a few hallmarks of this style. How can you tell a real from a fake? Well generally a true vintage piece will cost you a little bit more than your average West Elm price tag and won't come from a major brand such as West Elm, Wayfair or Article (a few big brands who frequently recreate this style in their furniture and decor). Try shopping from local thrift and consignment stores and vendors. Auctions and estate sales are also great places to find vintage pieces. Trust me, once you start noticing the quality and character of a Midcentury piece, you'll be able to tell the difference between a Knoll (genuine) and a Threshold (manufactured, specifically by Target.)
