Slowly but surely updates are being to the #376Farmhouse and I love how it's coming along! I am planning on doing a longer post to cover all the decor updates that have been done, inside and out, soon! But for now, I hope you enjoy checking out one of the spaces that I worked on recently. The basement common area that I shared with my brother until he moved out, was a hodge-podge of random pieces and did not have a cohesive sense of style. With the weather warming up, and being able to spend more time at home on the weekends, I decided I needed to give this space some TLC. As you can see from the before pictures, this space was a little all over the place. There were a lot of warm tones with the leather furniture, the accent pillows on the couch and the colorful array of books on the shelves. One of the firs things I did to update this space was to remove all of the covers off of the hardback books. This is an easy, totally free way of taking books that may not initially be aesthetically pleasing, and turning hem into great decor pieces. Hard back books are usually a monotone color underneath their paper covers and I love using them as accent pieces on a shelf or coffee table. It can take a busy book and make it a monochromatic gem, that makes it ten times easier to work with when it comes to decorating your space.
Without changing any of the major pieces in this space furniture wise, I was able to totally transform it by bringing in a cohesive color palette and a more direct vision. I think this space comes off as much more playful and inviting and it truly reflects my design style at the moment! I love the mix of vintage leather and wood, with neutral textures and tones from the couch and throw pillows and blankets. Taking a space in your own home doesn't have to break your budget. I spent a total of two hours and $20.00 when it came to this space! I became inspired by a peachy pink catch all dish, who knows what you will become inspired by! Speaking of inspiration, looking for it this Spring, during my whole "Spring cleaning mentally and physically" binge, has truly been a fun adventure. I am more aware of colors that I am drawn to when it comes to design and designers (both interior and even fashion) that truly speak to me. I have become more conscious of the accounts I follow on Instagram, and who I turn to for inspiration for a new project or blog post. Along with finding joy in the people and objects around me, I have also tried to develop a collective vision of how I want my own life to start looking. That means choosing to follow people who make me want to be a better blogger or be a person who gives more thoughtful design advice. I am on social media a lot during the day, and sometimes I forget that I get to have some say in what I see and what my mind is exposed to every day. By choosing who I follow more thoughtfully (i.e. celebs involved with meaningful projects, activists, designers who are forward thinking, bloggers who post some of the best self-help I have ever read in my life, and people who in general, are leaving a more positive mark on their social media followers) instead of choosing to be exposed to negativity and gossip and meaningless content, I have found that I don't get sucked into as many "social media black holes" where I mindlessly scroll and scroll for hours on end, not really remembering the last thing I looked at anyways. To sum up the above, by using tools you already have at your disposal, such as the ability to manage accounts you follow and social media pages you are exposed to every day, you can easily set yourself up to be exposed to more worldly, informative, and joyful content! Follow some new podcasts, follow Instagram accounts that post fun facts you can use in conversations later, follow Facebook pages that are actively engaging their follows in charity organizations and projects. These small steps can have a big impact on your day to day life! It's all about who you choose to look at, and what affect you want your social media to have on yourself and the people who follow you. Positivity is key! I hope you enjoyed today's post, although it has been long over due. And I hope it inspires you to see what quick, budget friendly tricks you can use to spruce up your space this Spring! I also hope that while you're cleaning up your physical space, you also stop and take a moment to clean up your digital/mental spaces. Reflect on how your spaces make you feel and if they don't make you feel great, get them feeling right! The same goes with your digital spaces. How do they make you feel? What tools can you use in order to make sure they are making you feel great too?
