When it comes to working with a budget to redesign a space, sometimes it's easier said than done. You go out and see a million different items you want to use because you like them individually, but forget to see how they will work together as a whole. I have fallen victim to this a dozen times! I'm such a sucker for picking out random knick knacks from consignment stores! This past weekend I was asked to redesign a living room and a dining room in a townhouse outside of Mebane, NC. I had a blast working on these spaces and can't wait to add the last finishing touches on them before the clients list their home later this Summer. When thinking about the overall feel I wanted to achieve for each space, I stuck to words such as warm, rustic, and comfortable. At first each room was cold and did not feel very lived in. The furniture and the atmosphere of each was stagnate. My clients are some of the most inviting and welcoming people I know and their home needed to reflect that. Each space definitely needed to be filled up with things that would make them come alive! Before I ran out to the nearest store to start buying pieces, I pulled out furnishings that the homeowners already had tucked away in storage. This included a wicker basket, a chest of drawers, a few simple decor pieces like a model ship and some kitchen items, and some wall art. We started in the dining room and began by moving the table horizontal in order to make the space seem larger and less cramped. The boxes were moved to the garage and the plants were put outdoors. We put the chest of drawers in this room to add interest to the space as well as provide storage for extra kitchen linens and dishware. The wood of both the chest and the dining set compliment each other perfectly. To decorate the table we kept to a simple color palette of rustic colors such as red, tan, and navy. The lanterns in the middle of the table add an outdoor vibe to the space and make it feel more inviting and compliment the clock on the wall. The dishware we choose features intricate designs that add color and a playful pattern to the table setting. The red tablecloth we choose makes for an eye catching and bold statement for the room. In the living room we decided to move the TV so that it was framed within the two windows and the couch was centered on the largest wall in the room. The TV was never big enough to fill up that space so it helped to put the couch there as well as a tall lamp and the decorative tree to cover more of the wall. We added the coffee table to add warmth and work as the centerpiece for the room. The decor on top of it is my favorite part of the whole space! The two glass jars are so unique and play off the lanterns in the dining room to connect each room. The mirror on the opposite wall adds dimension to the space and the gold frame helps complete the timeless look.
