I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, whether I'm entertaining friends, cooking (or at least attempting to!) or cleaning. There's a million ways to decorate a kitchen but it all comes down to how you use the space in your own day to day life. As a college student, I don't typically have the time to sit down at my island and enjoy my meals. I prefer to crash on my couch or on my living room floor and eat off my coffee table while I write papers or catch up on TV. Although I don't sit there often I do like to keep a couple of placemats out to add some much needed color to the space! I got mine from target a few weeks ago for $4.00 each and I am in love with them! I never thought I would adore placemats as much as I do these! They're fun, colorful and perfect for Spring and Summer. I've found it really difficult not to go back to Target and buy the matching plates, napkins, and decor for this certain design! Instead, I chose to compliment the bright pattern on the mats with two gold topped jars (also from Target, and on sale at that!) and a vase full of flowers a friend of mine recently gave me. I love the jars, they're simple and classic. I can picture using them in the fall as well, which makes me super happy that they're so versatile! I suggest keeping that in mind when it's time to buy new decor. Think of how long you could decorate your house with a certain item, I like to buy things that make sense in at least two seasons. That way, you're getting more bang for your buck and it'll push you creatively to think of new ways to decorate with them! My barstools were a gift from my mom and at first, I really didn't like them. I couldn't get over the color and couldn't imagine centering my kitchen around it. After about a month, I really warmed up to them and now I can't imagine my kitchen without them! They're vibrant and eye catching and really give my kitchen life! This style of barstool has been growing in popularity the past year and I can totally see why. They come in a wide range of colors and can compliment any space. No matter how many different times I decorate the kitchen, they always seem to look perfect! If you're interested in updating your bar seating, I highly suggest these. Whether you have a beach-y, modern or southern comfort vibe going on, these will look great. I don't ever see myself giving them up! Next to my oven, I have my beloved Keurig and a make shift "drink station." I don't find myself making cocktails and other fun drinks very often but I like that I have a space that makes it look like I do! I don't like keeping appliances on counters, I much prefer to have a few fun decorations and more space to get food ready or have space to dry dishes (my "drink station" is usually where both those things happen). Glass jars are so handy, I have one that holds corks and other small ones that hold candy. I like having a lot of sweet tooth options around, and so do guests! I'm also a huge fan of paper straws, ask anyone. I have an obscene collection of them and I can't begin to put into words why or how my obsession began. But they add some "fun" along with my sign to my kitchen, which is always a plus in my book! I hope to find my hands on a cute bar cart to move this little "station" too, but until then this is where they live! Does anyone else have a space like this in their home? I can't be the only one! A few things I would suggest anyone to keep in mind when decorating their kitchen is that kitchen decor is cute but make sure you leave yourself enough counter space in order to not lose your mind the next time your cooking for your family or, if you're like me, attempting to cook a five star meal for one. Don't feel the need to go over the top! Keep it simple. Find a few pieces that you love, for me it's my new placemats, and add a few complimenting pieces to them. Keep in mind a certain "look" or color scheme. Also, set up your space so that it works for you. I keep my cereal bowls out on top of the toaster oven because they're pretty and I also eat out of them a lot. I hate reaching all the way up to the top shelf to grab things I need. If I could keep my glassware out too, I'd totally do it! And keep it fun! Your kitchen should show your own unique personality and be a place where you want to be, just like I suggest every space in your home should feel! I hope you enjoyed taking a peek inside my kitchen! I would love to see yours! Post a picture to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #kspacekitchen so I can check out how you keep your kitchen working for you!
