A few weeks ago my good friend Kate asked me to help her totally transform her new space. I immediately said yes without any hesitation despite the fact that she lives about 1,000 miles away from me in Massachusetts! I was so excited to start this challenge and am so happy with how it's turning out so far! Let's start at the beginning and I'll show you how I worked with Kate to turn her space into the perfect escape! The space we were working with was pretty basic, I could tell every piece was there more for function rather than for enhancing the room to another level. Beige carpet, beige walls, but three big beautiful windows that I know could really be a nice focus for the room once they were dressed up a bit! After a few initial texts to get an idea of what Kate was wanting, I shot her an email with a few questions to find out more about her personal style, what she was hoping to get from her new space, how DIY savvy she was willing to get and of course her budget for the project! Kate asked for a room that was a space she could completely call her own that wasn't like a dorm and more adult. As a live in nanny working 24/7, she is definitely plenty deserving of a relaxing bedroom where she can getaway! She described her style as boho meets Johanna Gains; a good mix of natural elements such as wood and neutral colors with mixed metals as well. This was a vision I could totally picture because honestly who doesn't want a space to feel laid back and also put together to a T? A mood board is a good tool to use when designing a space because it allows you to see pieces you may have pinned or saved on your computer together so instead of looking at them separately you can look at them as a whole in a mock up of what the space may look like if you incorporate certain elements in it together! After the mood boards came a shopping list which would help Kate and I budget exactly what we wanted for her room. I think it's good to start out with a lot of ideas on this list that way we could think creatively and with all the freedom we needed, and then later cutting it down and deciding on what would really be purchased now, what would be purchased later, and what we could make ourselves! It was so easy helping Kate when she went shopping on the weekends and when she needed advice on pieces we hadn't talked about before because we were only a text away from each other! She has since moved into this space and has done an amazing job getting things set up on her own! Check out a few sneak peeks below! The room has already taken a total 180 and is starting to reflect her relaxed, minimalistic style a lot better than it did before and I can't wait to wrap up this fun project! We have a few more big surprises and finishing touches for this space but we'll save that goodness for Part 2!
